Area: 3,500 sqm
Gaw Capital’s People’s Place had commissioned One Bite Design Studio once again to revitalise an underutilised rooftop space for the benefit of residents living in On Ting Estate and Yau Oi Estate. Unlike basketball courts in the previous rounds, this time onebite has taken on the challenge to create Hong Kong’s first rooftop playscape for wheels!
Located on the carpark rooftop of the suburban community mall H.A.N.D.S, the 38,000 sq feet, three storey playscape offers a variety of fun rollersports activities suitable for people of all ages, gender, and skills. The lowest level is designed for inline skating, the middle for skateboarding, and the uppermost level allocated for bicycle and balance bike riders. World-renowned skatepark designers, California Skatepark participated as consultants in this project and offered their expertise on the design for the skateboarding facilities on the middle level that will challenge both recreational and expert skaters. The attention to detail and craftsmanship could also be found in the choice of durable materials and surface finishing that offer a safe yet challenging skateboarding experience for visitors.
Unlike traditional monochromatic concrete skateparks, the walls and floors of H.A.N.D.S’s playscape for wheels are decked out in bright colours and eye-catching motifs, such as a checkerboard pattern reminiscent of racing cars decals. The tongue-in-cheek slogans on walls offer a humorous way to motivate and spur on every “racer” to “go faster” and push beyond their limits!
This is part of People’s Place’s flagship project to create a connected 110,000 sq feet “Sportscamp in the Sky” on the rooftops of H.A.N.D.S’s multiple buildings complex that will promote a healthier lifestyle for Tuen Mun residents. These facilities include basketball courts, football fields, running tracks, sky gardens, as well as onebite’s Playscape for Wheels!
Skaters gonna Skate
-
Rollersports are gaining popularity in Hong Kong in recent years. Other than the influence of pop culture, speed skating and skateboarding have been included in recent editions of Asian Games and the Tokyo Olympics. H.A.N.D.S’s Playscape for Wheels fulfils a need for more facilities in suburban areas and helps to develop the next generation of athletes interested in rollersports. Onebite’s design complements this aspiration by creating an arena suitable for recreational as well as aspiring professional skaters to practise and challenge their skills.
